Genre Alert: Chick Lit

Genre Alert: Chick Lit

June 6, 2016/in Blog, Staff Picks/by Mike Paulus, Digital Services & Marketing Specialist

Summer is finally upon us and there is nothing more satisfying than a great book to read while enjoying your camping trip, trip to the beach, or visit to the pool.  Last summer I wrote a post featuring books I consider perfect for the beach and one on Women’s Fiction which in my opinion also includes great summer reads.  This year I am all about Chick Lit, which is really a sister or a cousin to Women’s Fiction.

Chick Lit stories are very similar to Women’s Fiction in that they are almost always written by a female author, feature a strong female character, and take place in a contemporary setting.  However, Chick Lit novels will also often have a romantic element to them.  The biggest difference is that a Chick Lit Novel is lighter and more focused on humor.  Want to learn more?  Take a look at our helpful Readers Corner Guide!

Onecake of the best Chick Lit books (leaning heavily towards romance) that I have read lately is by a new author named Amy Reichert.  The Coincidence of Coconut Cake was a breath of fresh air and I was hooked after the first page.  I love reading books about places I have been, and our heroine in this book hails from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  To make even more delicious she is a chef in Milwaukee!  I know that you will love it just as much as I did after you’ve read it and want more!  Luckily for you Amy has a new book coming out later this year called Luck, Love & Lemon Pie.  I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek at it and loved it just as much as the first one!

Want some other Chick Lit titles to read?  Try these!

Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding
Sex and the City by Candace Bushnell
Can You Keep a Secret? By Sophie Kinsella
Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella
The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger
P.S. I Love You by Cecelia Ahern

Watermelon by Marian Keyes
