Before living in Lake Tahoe, California, Ellen Mahaffy's photographs began with an idea the she wanted to express through images. Once she encountered Tahoe's diverse environment, she found that the images around her expressed their own ideas; she just had to be attentive and receptive to them. When she looked carefully, she often found that the iconic shapes of the natural landscape transformed themselves into something before her eyes, and this surreality found in nature began to appear in her photographs.
Ellen Mahaffy earned a BFA in photography from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland, and an MFA in Visual Studies from the State University of New York in Brockport. She currently teaches photography, visual communication, and magazine editing and design courses at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire.
Artist's reception is Sunday, September 13, 2 - 3:30 p.m. in the Gallery, 2nd floor.
