Computers / Internet

The library provides 24 workstations in the Reference area, 3 in Young Adult, and 2 in Youth Services which allow public access to a variety of networked electronic resources, the MORE online catalog, magazine indexes and other databases and the Internet. Microsoft Office products are available on all Internet workstations including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

In the adult area of the library, 13- to 17-year-olds have unfiltered access to the Internet unless a parent or legal guardian requests that only filtered access be allowed. Children 12 and under have filtered Internet access in the Adult area unless unfiltered access is requested by a parent or legal guardian. Parents also have the option to deny their child (under age 18) all access to the Internet. This does not deny the child access to the MORE online catalog, Microsoft Office products or library subscription databases.

Only young adults ages 13 to 19 may use the filtered Internet workstations in the Young Adult Lounge on the second floor of the library. Unless library staff has a written statement to the contrary from a child's parent or legal guardian, a NO NET notation on a child's library record will be interpreted to mean that the child may also not accompany another customer that is using the Internet.

Public computer workstation procedures:

  • Customers are required to comply with the library's policies and procedures on computer use and the Internet. Click here to view the library's Policy on Computer and Internet Use , the Policy on Internet Safety and Computer and Internet Use Rules of Conduct .
  • Internet use is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Customers are allowed 60 minutes of use that automatically extends to a total of 90 minutes per day if other customers are not waiting.
  • There is a 30-minute limit on the computer workstations in Youth Services with an 30-minute extension if no other customers are waiting; customers using the computer workstations in the Young Adult area are limited to a total of 1 hour per day.
  • To log on to a computer workstation, enter your first name, last name and library card number. Library policy requires customers to use their own cards to log on to the computer workstations. Warnings and loss of Internet privileges will occur if customers are found to use cards other than their own for computer workstation access.
  • Customers who wish to download files may bring their own formatted 3.5-inch disks to do so or purchase a disk at the Services desk for $1.00. The use of USB devices and access to the CD-Rom drives are also allowed on all public computer workstations.
  • Customers may print up to ten pages free of charge; there is a ten-cent charge for every page over ten. Payments for printing may be made at the Circulation Services desk. Failure to pay for printing may result in loss of Internet privileges.
  • Customers may not install their own software programs or run their own software products on the public computer workstations.
  • If a customer maliciously attempts to alter or destroy library computer hardware or software, this will be treated as vandalism and the police will be contacted. If a customer is attempting to disrupt the normal operation of the computer for such purposes of gaining more time, loss of Internet privileges may result.
  • Customers handling financial transactions or other activities do so at their own risk. In general, electronic communication is not secure and is subject to outside intervention and to monitoring by network administrators in the usual performance of their duties.
  • Customers using the public computer workstations must refrain from the use of sounds and visuals which might harass and/or disrupt the ability of other library customers to use the library and its resources. If a staff member feels that the web site being viewed is disruptive or harassing to staff or customers, the viewer will be asked to exit that site. Use of chatlines, e-mail and/or news and discussion groups in a harassing and/or disruptive manner at the library is inappropriate.
  • U. S. copyright law (Title 17, U. S. Code) prohibits the unauthorized reproduction or distribution of copyrighted materials, except as permitted by the principles of fair use. Any responsibility for any consequences of copyright infringement lies with the user; the library disclaims any liability or responsibility from such use.
  • The library assumes no liability for any loss or damage to users' data or disks, nor for any personal damage or injury incurred as a result of the library's electronic resources. This includes, but is not limited to, damage or injury sustained from invasions of the users' privacy.
