From Books to Tents: How the Library Can Help You Connect with Nature

May 12, 2025/in Blog, Library Services, Staff Picks/by Connor, Reference Services

There’s nothing quite like the quiet rustle of trees overhead, the call of birds echoing through the woods, or the satisfaction of taking off your hiking boots after a long day exploring. For me, getting outdoors isn’t just a hobby. It’s a way to recharge, reconnect, and reawaken my sense of wonder.

Whether it’s hiking in Eau Claire County, camping under the stars, paddling down a river, or simply practicing yoga in the grass, being in nature gives me a kind of clarity I don’t find anywhere else.

And here’s the best part: you don’t need to travel far, spend a lot of money, or even be an experienced adventurer to get started. One of my favorite hidden gems for outdoor inspiration and gear is right in the heart of Eau Claire: the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library.

That’s right. Our local library isn’t just a place for books and quiet reading. It’s also a launchpad for your next adventure, offering a wide variety of resources to help you explore the great outdoors in every season.

Here’s a closer look at all the incredible tools, kits, and materials available at the library to help you get outside and start adventuring, whether you’re a curious beginner or a seasoned explorer.

Books to Inspire Your Next Adventure

The library has a deep collection of titles that cover just about every outdoor activity you can imagine:

  • Hiking guides for Wisconsin and beyond
  • Rock climbing manuals and safety tips
  • Camping books and backcountry survival handbooks
  • Canoeing and kayaking routes across the Midwest
  • Outdoor mindfulness and yoga books

Whether you’re planning a day hike in Lowe’s Creek, a weekend camping trip to Brunet Island State Park, or your very first paddle down the Chippewa River, there’s a book waiting to guide you.

Outdoor Adventure Kits – Ready When You Are

Another thing that really makes the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library awesome is the physical kits you can borrow, packed with the gear you need to actually do the things you read about. Here are some of my favorites:

🏕️ The Tent Kit

Thinking about camping but not sure if you’re ready to invest in your own tent? This kit has you covered. It’s a great way to try out sleeping under the stars without spending a dime.

🚶‍♀️ The Hiking Kit

Each hiking kit includes maps, field guides, binoculars, a compass, and even bug spray! Everything you need for a day on the trails. It’s perfect for families, first-timers, or solo adventurers looking to discover local hiking spots.

🧘 The Yoga Kit

Unroll your mat on the grass at Phoenix Park, listen to the river, and flow through a series of gentle stretches with one of the library’s yoga kits. A beautiful way to combine wellness with nature.

❄️ The Snowshoes Kit

Winter doesn’t mean the end of outdoor fun! Borrow a snowshoes kit and explore the trails in a whole new way. Great for all ages and surprisingly easy to learn.

Parks Pass Kits – Free Entry!

One of the biggest barriers to outdoor exploration can be access—but the library is making it easier than ever to enjoy Wisconsin’s natural beauty, no matter your budget.

🌲 Wisconsin State Parks Kit

Includes a day-use vehicle pass, field guides, and suggestions for where to go. This kit opens the door to 60+ state parks and forests across Wisconsin—completely free.

🌳 Eau Claire County Parks Kit

Love staying local? This kit connects you with the hidden gems around Eau Claire County, like Big Falls, Tower Ridge, Lowes Creek, and more.

🌌 Explore Beaver Creek Reserve Kit

Perfect for families and nature lovers, this kit helps you dive into the science and wonder of the outdoors with activities, learning materials, and free passes to the Beaver Creek Reserve.

🌿 Let the Library Be Your Trailhead

So next time you’re looking for a little sunshine, fresh air, or a new adventure, don’t overlook your local library as your first stop. Swing by the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library, check out a kit or a few books, and let your next outdoor journey begin.

Because the wilderness is waiting, and with a little help from the library, it’s easier than ever to answer the call.
