Once On Top of the Other
Daniel Atyim
ink and aluminum tape on paper
“Fascinated by texture, through my artwork I explore the function and meaning of surfaces primarily through two-dimensional media used in drawing and painting. I’m interested in the history, the stories embedded in surfaces; their ability to describe or dim underlying structures- particularly the metamorphosis implied in natural and industrial facades. My artwork originates from contemplating the natural world but is ultimately culled from my subconscious. Imagination and intuition shape the end results, which are abstract and encourage the viewer to decipher. Chance, play and drama are equally important aspects of my work, which embodies memory and the formation of ‘the psychology of being present’. The results simultaneously create an absence and presence of image, echoing fleeting moments in time. The fragile qualities foregrounded in these drawings signify loss and regeneration.”
