What Lies Beneath the Surface
Eleni Hein
Acrylic paint, plaster and burlap on canvas
“I’ve always grown up with a strong appreciation for water and the power that it holds. It is the key to life that is so easily taken for granted. Currently, one of the most important aquatic ecosystems in our area is under attack from those who want to exploit what lies beneath the surface. The Boundary Waters is a place where millions of people and their families have made unforgettable memories in its natural serenity (including myself), but it is more than just an escape. This area is a sacred ecosystem that supports not just the animals around it, but ourselves as well. Sulfide-ore copper mining is the death of any ecosystem that doesn’t even result in a worth while payout for those involved. Let this piece be a warning of what is to come if we don’t unite and stand up to those who would like to poison our land for profit. Get involved. Save the Boundary Waters.”
