Event Horizon

Mary Hermanson

pieced/quilted fabric

“An event horizon is the theoretical boundary around a black hole beyond which no light or other radiation can escape. This composition reflects this concept of the boundary marking the limits of a black hole. I created this by using the elements and principles of design, combined with the symmetry of kaleidoscopic design, and the techniques and materials of traditional quilting. This piece came alive through the use of a fabric palette that is ever-evolving as I cut, match, and sew over 300 pieces of fabric to achieve the final work of art. As I create new and exciting images there is always the elements of surprise, change, and chance that lead me to the next work of art.”
