Ned Gannon

acrylic on arches

“’The opposite of a fact is falsehood, but the opposite of one profound truth may very well be another profound truth.’ —Niels Bohr

Flood serves as an expression of my overlapping interests in science, natural history, mythology, religion, ecology, art, and storytelling. The image might evoke an event that could be perceived differently depending on the personal associations a viewer brings with them—for some the scene may seem biblical, for some it may signify ecological catastrophe, and for yet others it may evoke an esoteric myth or even a wondrous convergence. A painting then, becomes a vessel to hold these and any possible interpretations in tension with one another so they could all be true at various moments that might overlap and make two seemingly contradictory ideas true, if only for a moment.
