“Whipped Peter is based on an 1863 photo of a black man’s keloid scars, the result of horrible beatings inflicted by a Louisiana plantation overseer.
I remember first seeing this photo as a child, but it was the killing of George Floyd that really forced me to examine my own white privilege. And come to terms with how frequently innocence and opportunities are unfairly granted or withheld arbitrarily based solely on the lightness or darkness of one’s skin tone.
While studying and drawing the individual shapes of Peter’s scars, I tried to imagine the enduring pain of both the physical and emotional scars.”
