“I am intrigued with the dark spaces between the stones in the walls and the doorways of ruined buildings and stone walls that exist throughout Ireland. The dark cervices of the stone walls and light shining through the door and window openings have provided visual sources for these paintings, part of a series called “Openings.” Through these paintings, I explore the formal relationships of shapes and spaces to each other. I do not mean to define which is shape and which is space, instead I have strived to create ambiguity with the positive and negative areas. I am interested in composing paintings that create tension in how the shapes relate to each other. The dark bolder shapes contrast with the lighter areas while each exhibits a richness achieved through the layers below. Subdued color in a limited palette and contrasting textures are informed by my visual sources. I see edges as a link between shapes where the shapes at times morph into one another. With their varied colors and more gestural marks, edges provide contrast to the more solid areas of the paintings.”
