1882-05-31 Lumbering Frank Murray, pilot for Empire, took six strings lumber in one raft to Reed's Landing. Biggest raft ever sent down from EC. Contained forty two cribs, 426,000'.

1882-04-27 Fires Huge fire on west side caused by spark from steamboat (Minnie Herman). Pioneer block on southeast corner of Water and 5th Ave. Burned 63 stores and 19 barns.
1882-04-27 Fires Wales Willard, engineer of engine #1 fought fire next to his own home which burned with all contents.
1882-04-20 Iowa City Improved & enlarged to take place of Ida Campbell which is to be put on Mississippi for government work.
1882-04-20 Chippewa Valley Railroad New road gives things quite a lively air on the west side. There are so many street crossings from Chippewa to the Shawtown bridge that the rule which requires whistling for every crossing keeps up a lively toot from Chippewa all the way down.

1880-06-24 Bridges - Chippewa River Captain Rundle taken contract for bringing old bridge timbers back to city for $900. Old bridge can be replaced using considerable new timber. Can be built so west side outlet will be on State St. Mr. Hadley operating two ferries now.
