1874-07-31 Liberty Pole in Eau Claire Liberty pole still has flag on it. Recollections of RF Wilson: First flag raised in CV was on July 4, 1856 at crossing of Dewey and Kelsey Sts. From Marshall Cousins scrap book at Madison Library (page 62): Pole stood near southeast corner of Water and Fourth Sts. East side pole moved from original spot nearly opposite Spafford's Bank and moved to public squire and spliced.

1874-06-18 City Growth Many new homes in 6th Ward. Many of considerable size. Many in vicinity of Chippewa and Niagara. Six large homes on 3rd Avenue, as near each other & as near Bride & Pine as they can be put.
1874-06-18 Iowa City New steamer owned by Ash will take place of Moniter.
1874-06-18 Fire Department St. Paul fire department accepted invitation to annual parade on 25th. Parade attracted 300 guests from abroad. CF band accompanied their fire department. EC Fire Co. marched to depot in rain accompanied by Victor's Band and Norwegian Band. St. Paul, Minneapolis fire departments, Great Western Band, Minneapolis City Band, ate lunch at Hook and Ladder Company's #1 fire house and marched to west side park for banquet, etc.
1874-06-11 Ida Campbell Edward Campbell vs. Arthur M. Sherman reversed by Supreme Court. $15,000 asked. Ida C. siezed in 1870.
1874-06-11 West Side Schools Citizens of 6th Ward bought block 14 of Whipple and Bellingers addition for new school, 60'x60', L shaped, 2 stories.
1874-05-21 City Growth 6th Ward now has 1000 residents, eight stores, a brewery & a new courthouse. Want another school. Congress St. recently opened between 3rd & 5th & planted with young shade trees. Since practice of conveying dead horses to woods back of University Square was discontinued, the elegibility of the spot as a place for sparking has become generally recognized.
1874-04-04 Moniter Henry Ash has contracts with every mill but one to return raft crews on Moniter which he bouhgt from EC Lumber Co. & Ida Campbell which he chartered. They used to send them to St. Paul & back by train.
1874-04-04 Chapman and Thorp - Eau Claire Lumber Company Store burned down; will rebuild with stone.

1873-12-20 Fires Building opposite Eau Claire House burned. Kerosene poured on back of house occupied by saloon. John Betz shoemaker also destroyed. William Korn tailor and D. Case harness maker, Hunner's brewery in 1st Ward also burned. City should offer a reward for capture of incindiaries.

Sidewalk on Barstow repaired to EC St. Been in bad condition since fire of May 1869. Water St. repaired with gravel & cobble sotne. New road to Durand, parallel with the old plank has reduced the later to a ridge no longer available for travel.
1873-05-22 Central House Joyce bought last fragment of old Central House. Having it moved.
1873-04-01 Clark & Ingram Bank Clark & Ingram's bank caved in & broke in half. Baby on 2nd floor rescued & furniture & clothes passed out through window before it caved in completely
1873-03-20 Clark & Ingram Bank Clark & Ingram digging out old cellar of Chandler House preparatory to building their new bank.
1873-03-20 Dole, Ingram and Kennedy Eddy Mill about one and a half miles from railroad station on north side, but a good path along ridge behind Mt Simon shortens the distance. Quite a village has sprung up in immediate vicinity of mill. New boarding house accommodates one hundred men. Store did $12,000 worth of business last year. George Gans is bookkeeper.
