1869-10-28 Stages Cars now come as far as Humbird. Stages leave EC 7 a.m. and connect with train going east making stage ride only 7 hours instead of 12 or 18 as before. The car should reach Augusta in about 6 weeks.

A little further up is the residence of LE Latimer. WW West building commodious residence directly ooposite Latimers.. Further up near Seminary is house of Ethan Allen.

1869-06-03 Central House Huge fire destroyed Chandler House.
1869-06-03 Chandler House Incendiary fire in Chandler House barn on Kelsey St. Two horses, one mule & a cow burned to death. Chandler House destroyed.
1869-06-03 Fires At quarter to 12 on the 22nd Chandler House barn on Kelsey St. burned so rapidly, flames enveloped 2 horses, 1 mule and a cow. Spread to Chandler House running rapidly through 3rd story which was not plastered. Ignited several buildings across street, also across Kelsey to store owned by Peter Truax in which G.B. Chapman is located.

1869-05-31 Fires New location of merchants due to fire. Levi Slingluff in Kenyon's store on Barstow; S.V. Wychoff in new brick building of Matt Kneer adjoining Chandler House; G.B. Chapman with Smith Brothers next to Yankee Clothing store; Andrew Jackson in with Welles Cook and Co. Fire loss in two weeks $150,000.

1869-04-01 Bridges - Chippewa River Bridge completed in 2 1/2 months. Bridge 582 feet long, four piers. Toll keepers appointed are Tom Lamphere, EC & Fred Kritzner of West EC. Salary $750 per year. It is estimated toll for next six years will more than pay costs. Toll is $.05 per person, $.10 per team.

1868-11-30 Porter's Mills--Northwest Lumber Corporation After fire of May 1864, GE Porter in company with two partners purchased mill for $9,000. Porter was then a poor man but became manager. Mill increased rapidly until it burned in 1867. Next winter DR Moon bought half interest and rebuilt mill and pine lands valued at $90,000.

1868-03-26 Chapman and Thorp Chapman and Thorp replacing mill burned down last fall with larger one forty-six feet by one hundred thirty-six feet. Will be model seen in the Chippewa Valley.
1868-03-12 Bridges - EC River Thorp writes long article about Dewey St. bridge. Built by Chapman & Thorp at a cost of $4,000. Voting on question of North EC bridge went 110 for & 57 against. Thorp investigators got enough affidavits of people voting for it to show tampering with ballot box. WT Galloway wrote a long rebuttal.
