In War, Everyone Loses
Kay Brathol-Hostvet
Antique helmet, barbed wire, old wood, paper, polymer clay
“My father served in WWII in the Pacific Islands. In the last years of his life, he was haunted by things he had witnessed and personally experienced in the war-torn jungles. As his dementia progressed, his memories became nightmares. The world seems to be always at war–in countries large and small. Although we know that we must fight against fascism, imperialism, and totalitarianism, it does not negate the damages done and in the age of nuclear weapons, no country is safe by being “neutral.” Neville Chamberlain, Prime Minister of the U.K. from 1937-40, declared, “In war, whichever side may call itself the victor, there are no winners, but all are losers.” We must never forget.”
