“Letters, arrows, road signs, and initials are all symbolic and culturally shared symbols. What does RFD stand for? If you were born in the United States of America, and given the context provided by the other symbols, most likely your first thought would be Rural Free Delivery. When I made this piece, my intent was to symbolically convey the concept of “Rural.” However, I have recently learned that RFD is widely used in very different contexts and has completely different meanings dependent on the shared understanding of those persons within a particular cultural or subcultural context. Some examples: Radio Frequency Denervation, Rate of Force Development, Request for Discussion, Request for Debit, Reserve Force Decoration and Request for Deployment.”
