Fibonacci Pinecone

Amy Ambelang

“I’m a high school librarian who loves making things. This quilt was inspired by a picture of a pinecone I saw in a waiting room. As I waited, I started realizing the pinecone’s spirals follow the Fibonacci sequence, one of nature’s math tricks where each number builds on the last. It was one of those things that came together even better than I imagined. The quilt mirrors that spiral growth in fabric, each piece expanding outward in measured progression and then shrinking inward with the reverse progression. Like waiting, quilting is an exercise in patience- small increments that eventually form something larger. It’s a reminder that even in moments of waiting, something is unfolding. Sometimes it just takes a pinecone, and a lot of patience, to make it happen. The number of times the Fibonacci sequence occurred naturally while making this quilt surprised even me- see how many times you can find it!”
