Thoughtful Thrifting
I like old stuff. I just can’t help but romanticize it.
For example, let’s say you want to buy and keep a copy of The Hobbit. I like brand-new book smell as much as the next person, but there is something special about secondhand.
It’s a little harder to find and will take more time to search. But, if you find a used copy, it will likely be well-loved. It might be a rare, or unusual printing. It could have highlighted passages, and notes* from previous owners; parts of the story that have touched someone and changed their life. All the little characteristics are earned, not bought. Call me dramatic, but I think that owning a well-loved book is like owning a small piece of someone’s soul… something you can’t put a price on.
*Notes are cool! But please don’t write in library items.
So for all of us who are spring cleaning, getting ready for garage sales, and just love old, secondhand stuff… here are some tips and resources to help you explore the magic of loved and reused!
- Savers and Goodwill are great, but Eau Claire is full of small thrift businesses. Try Visit Eau Claire to sort and view any hiding little shops you might be looking for!
- Remember your thrift etiquette. Some smaller businesses prefer or may only accept cash, so it’s good to have it just in case. I would also recommend taking your smallest bag or just your wallet; many shops do not allow backpacks or large bags.
- Try your hand at simple sewing. It’s easier to learn than you think, and it can open your thrifting experience from one size to all! It can also keep your items out of a landfill after one measly tear. No sewing machine? No problem! Check one out here.
- Love garage sales, but don’t want to waste your time hopping from one baby clothes sale to the next? You can always find specific listings with photos of items for sale, and location information on social media groups + craigslist. This is a great way to find neighborhood-wide sales!
And of course, I have to mention my all-time favorite place to thrift… the Friends of the Library Bookstore, located on the lower level of the library. All proceeds go to fund the library, and all items are in fantastic condition. The price is ALWAYS right with hardcovers, paperbacks, and media all under $5! And if you have any items that did not sell at YOUR garage sale, we are happy to give them new life here as donations.

So get out there, explore, and find that one-of-a-kind item that’s just for you!
