International Games Month 2023!

October 23, 2023/in Blog, Curiosities, Library Events, Special Interest/by Bradley, Reference Services

It’s time for our annual celebration of International Games Month, yet again! This year, we will be changing things up a bit from past years. Most of the events are going to be focused on video game development. You can register for the classes here and see below for more details.

The one event definitely returning due to its consistent popularity is Adult Game Night, though we have changed venues just to switch things up a bit. This year it will be at Lazy Monk Brewing on Thursday, November 2nd from 6-8 pm. As usual, we will be providing games with mature themes such as Cards Against Humanity and What Do You Meme? We are trying something new with an asymmetrical game called Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes where one player uses an iPad to try to disarm a fictional bomb and a team flips through a paper manual to try to explain what the defuser needs to do to disarm it. Customers are also welcome to bring their own games if they have something to share.

For our first video game development class on November 9th from 6-7 pm, we are going to be playing around with a free and very fun software called BeepBox to create some nostalgic video game music. Even if you don’t intend to use the music in a game, this class will give you some of the ins and outs of BeepBox to get you started on creating your own music for anything you want. All musical skill levels are welcome (We’ll have headphones). Here’s a song I worked on in preparation for the class.

Our second class takes place November 16th from 6-7 pm and will be all about pixel sprites. If you are unfamiliar, check out this little flappy wizard hat on the right as an example. We will be creating a basic animated sprite that may be used in a game, or even as a fun addition to your signature, as an avatar, or as a wandering sprite in your browser (Search for Shimeji browser extension). Animated sprite possibilities are endless.

Our final class will have you making your very own retro-style RPG using RPG Maker MZ. If you attend the first two classes, you will be able to import your assets from those classes into this work, but will not be necessary if you can’t make it to those classes. The software comes with some great vanilla assets to get you started either way. This class is a bit longer running from 6-8 pm on November 30th. Check out the example I made to prepare for the class below.
