Tall Ships and Rubber Ducks

August 8, 2016/in Blog, Special Interest/by Peter, Reference Associate

The Tall Ships Duluth 2016 event, to be held in just a week from August 18-21, will see nine sailing ships that are replicas of those that took to the waters from the 16th to 19th centuries, sail into Duluth, Minnesota’s harbor for all to marvel at. If it’s as popular as years past, it may draw the attention of close to 250,000 attendees. Tall Ships visitors can stand on the shore and catch a glimpse of the ships throughout Duluth’s harbor, step aboard the ships for a tour, or even climb aboard one of the ships as it sails about the waters of Lake Superior. It will be truly something to behold!Rubber Duck

If you’re curious and would like to read more about Sailing and Tall Ships, check out one of these books from our collection.

If you do travel up to Duluth next week, you will be treated to another unique attraction. The World’s Largest Rubber Duck , “Mama Duck” will be appearing at the event this year! The festival website clarifies that “Mama Duck is a viewable attraction. She is not available to ride.” So sorry to report, no rubber duck rides!

Interested in learning more about the history of the Rubber Duck? The National Toy Hall of Fame offers this summary.

If you end up attending the Tall Ships Duluth event, please do stop by the library and share your thoughts on the spectacle. We’d love to hear what you thought!
