Love That App for You (8 Great Library Apps)

February 14, 2022/in Blog, Library Services/by Anna, Reference & Digital Services Librarian

Screenshot of staff list for Teen Books for Black History MonthICYMI, (in case you missed it), our MORE library system has rolled out an app that allows users to check their library accounts from your device. That’s right! You can now check your borrowing, place items on hold, see if your items are in transit, and browse staff created recommendations from your preferred device.

Search over 1.4 million items from over 50 MORE libraries. You can locate the app by searching for “MORE Libraries” in the Apple App and Google Play stores.

But wait, there’s more!

Don’t leave your app store just yet! The MORE app isn’t the only app you can download to use from your device. If you are an Eau Claire Library cardholder there are eight more apps you can download and install on your device. That’s right, EIGHT more apps you can use on your device ranging from apps that will let you search for local businesses and people, stream music, listen to audiobooks, learn a new language, track your reading progress for library-led reading programs, and peruse your favorite magazines.

Let’s count them down and breakdown what you’ll need to make them work.

8. Beanstack

Search for Beanstack in your app store, enter “L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library” to find your site, and enter your existing username and password, or click the “Sign up!” button to create an account. Easily track your progress toward this year’s Reading Challenge and the upcoming Summer Library Program.

7. Mango Languages

This accessible app has more than 70 languages you can learn through interactive, downloadable lessons. Create an account with an email address and unique password to save your progress. For more information on how to create an account, see this blog post.

 6. LinkedIn Learning

Now you can learn on the go! Search for LinkedIn Learning in your app store (not to be confused with LinkedIn: Network & Job Finder app), click “Sign in with your library card,” and enter ecpubliclibrary as your Library ID. For more information about LinkedIn Learning (formerly known as Lynda) and curated course content, please visit the LinkedIn Learning page on our library’s website.

5. Freading (note: discontinued as of December 31, 2022)

Freading has a fantastic selection of always available non-fiction titles, including access to Lonely Planet Destination Guides. Search for Freading in the app store, download, and click the “Sign In” button beneath the search box. Enter your Zip code, select MORE (IFLS LIBRARY SYSTEM), and scroll down to sign up with your library card and last name. You will also need to enter an email address and set a password to create an account.

4. Libby

Everyone’s favorite app with a massive collection of e-books, e-audiobooks, and, new in 2021, magazines, Libby allows Wisconsin library cardholders access to Wisconsin’s Digital Library. For detailed instructions on downloading the app for smartphones and devices, see this guide. Search for Libby in the app store and select the “Libby, by OverDrive” app.

3.  Flipster

Even MORE magazines are available via Flipster. Search for Flipster in your app store, download, and get started with titles like Country Living, The New Yorker, and National Geographic. See our Smartphone/Tablet guide for further instructions.

2. Data Axle Reference Solutions

Did you know that there is an app for your favorite online reference tool and research tool? Formerly known as ReferenceUSA, Data Axle Reference Solutions provides real-time access to accurate, in-depth information on U.S. businesses and U.S. residents. The Data Axle app allows users to search for businesses and consumers on the go. Download the app from your app store, enter your Eau Claire zip code, and your 10-digit barcode and start searching today.

1. hoopla

Last, but definitely not least, is hoopla. You will need your 10-digit library card, your PIN, and will have to set up your account with an email and password for future logins. See our user guide for more detailed instructions. New this year: BingePass, offering users access to The Great Courses Library Collection, Curiosity Stream, and a curated collection of magazines. hoopla BingePass gives you 7 days of unlimited access to content with a single borrow! Oh, and there are comics, TV series, really hot audiobooks, and for fellow fans of Ted Lasso, a little known film called Superbob starring Brett Goldstein.

There you have it. 10 apps that you can download from your app store and start using with your Eau Claire library card. And if you ever have any questions about how to set up or use any of these apps, please call our Information & Reference department at 715-839-5004 or email us at reference@eauclaire.lib.wi.us.
