New Voices and Old: Celebrating National Poetry Month

April 6, 2026/in Blog/by Christine, Reference Services

New voices and old,
Stories across space and time:
Poets paint with words

Whether you’re new to poetry or a seasoned aficionado, April is a month worth celebrating: National Poetry Month!

Started in 1996, this literary celebration is in its thirtieth year of bringing attention to the various types of poetry and the ways poetry enriches our lives.

The library’s collection of books is full of an array of voices from different eras, different cultures, and different walks of life – all waiting to be thumbed through and thought over. Poetry paints different images to invoke meaning, substance, diversity of experience; it can give troubling times hope and joyous times a voice for celebration.

If you’re more of a doer than a reader, perhaps you’d like to try writing poetry of your own. There are so many different types of poetry — from haiku (like the one at the start of this article) to odes and sonnets – and we have resources to help you learn the differences between them. Or you could experiment with blackout poetry – and in our RCU Dabble Box makerspace on the lowest level of the building, we have all the supplies you’d need to do so, like old books, markers, and extra paper.

Poetry truly is for everyone, and National Poetry Month encourages us all to appreciate the artistry, whimsy, and power of reading, weaving, and appreciating words. The library can support your appreciation of poetry – whether you’re reading it or creating it!
