Reading with the Stars

July 23, 2018/in Blog, Special Interest/by Michaela, Technical Services

If someone loved a book enough that they felt the need to share it, you are bound to be on the right track for your next favorite read. I absolutely love when people share the title of a book that they enjoyed. It is also exciting when you learn that a celebrity is an avid reader. These days with the help of the Internet and the use of social media you can even read along in several different celebrity books clubs.

The Sun Does Shine book cover

The most well known of these clubs is probably Oprah’s Book Club. It began as part of The Oprah Winfrey Show and now incorporates the use of social media. The current selection is The Sun Does Shine by Anthony Ray Hinton. Oprah’s website offers an interview with the author, a reading guide, the opportunity to sign-up for the book club newsletter, and much more. For a complete list of titles that have been selected for this book club, click here.

Next Year in Havana book coverOne of my favorite celebrities to follow on Instagram is Reese Witherspoon. Her posts are fun, eye-catching, bright, and inspirational. She has her own account but I prefer the account she has specifically for her book club, Reese’sBookClubxHelloSunshine. The description states, “A community celebrating women’s stories, created by @ReeseWitherspoon for @hellosunshine.” Here you will find nothing but posts devoted to the love of reading and books. What’s better than that? The latest pick is Next Year in Havana by Chanel Cleeton. You can join in on the discussion via Instagram, Facebook, or Goodreads. You can also learn more at the official website by clicking here.

Milk and Honey book coverEmma Watson is another celebrity who has been a huge advocate for reading. In 2016, she started a Feminist book club to share books and essays about equality. She describes the picks as “funny, inspiring, sad, thought-provoking, [and] empowering!” Everyone is welcome to join in on the discussion. This book club is hosted on Goodreads and is called “Our Shared Shelf.” Emma selects one book every two months. The current selection is Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur.

Children of Blood and Bone book coverOne of the newest celebrities to jump on the book club bandwagon is The Tonight Show host, Jimmy Fallon. In June, Jimmy announced that he would be starting a summer book club and listed off five possible picks for viewers to vote on. The overwhelming majority selected Young Adult fantasy novel, Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi. Updates for this book club will be posted on Instagram and Facebook and you can join in by using the hashtag #TonightShowSummerReads.

Other celebrities with book clubs include Sarah Jessica Parker, Emma Roberts, and Florence Welch. There are also many out there who use their social media accounts as a way to share what they are personally reading.
